Guardianship is a legal process that gives an adult (called the “guardian”), the authority to care for and make decisions for a person who is unable to do so for themselves. A guardian can be responsible for a child's care, or for managing an adult's personal care decisions, or for their finances or property.

A court will appoint a guardian when it determines that the individual is at risk and there is no less restrictive way to meet their needs. Guardianship should be a last resort because it can deprive an individual of many of their own rights to make their own decisions.
