What Types of Custody Are There?
The different types of custody:
- Legal Custody – the authority to make decisions regarding the child (medical, school, religious, etc.)
- Shared Legal Custody – the parents share this authority to make decisions regarding the child (medical, school, religious, etc.)
- Physical Custody – where the child is physically residing
- Primary Physical Custody – the parent with whom the child primarily resides
- Shared Physical Custody – An arrangement by which the residence of the child is split between the parents’ residences
- Partial Custody – Custody time for the parent who does not live with the child(ren)
- Visitation – can be supervised or unsupervised, but does not typically involve a parent keeping a child overnight
